About the NEST Laboratory
The Nanoscale Engineering Science and Technology (NEST) Laboratory is a multi-user facility with state-of-the-art equipment that enables research and development through the interrogation, characterization and manipulation of materials at the nanoscale.
The mission of the NEST Laboratory is to:
- Enable and promote collaborative sponsored research in nanoscale engineering, science and technology,
- Provide technical support to various R&D projects and programs that require NEST lab capabilities,
- Facilitate the teaching of laboratory classes that complement classroom courses in nanotechnology, and
- Serve as a resource to industry to facilitate nanotechnology transfer and commercialization.
The NEST laboratory was established in 2004 with funding from the University of Dayton and the Wright Brothers Institute and is located in the Science Center, rooms 041 and 043, on the campus of the University of Dayton. The laboratory is available for use by academic, government and industrial researchers from any field of study. Detailed information about the instruments housed in the NEST laboratory and their capabilities can be found on the NEST Instrument List.
Sample analysis can be accomplished by two methods at the NEST laboratory. Researchers may come to the laboratory and conduct the analysis themselves, or they may submit samples to a NEST lab staff member who will conduct the analysis and provide a data report.
For those who are interested in submitting samples for analysis, but do not wish to learn to use the instruments themselves, please contact Dale Grant at 937-229-3828, or Barb Miller at 937-229-2589. A listing of UD staff with expertise on particular NEST lab instruments can be found below. We welcome the opportunity to put our skills to work for you!
For those who wish to learn to use the NEST instruments, the instructions for first time users are listed below.
1. Select an instrument for training.
2. Call or e-mail the POC (point of contact) for the particular instrument.
3. Schedule a training session with the POC.
4. Print and complete the New User Information Questionnaire and bring it with you to the first session.
5. Have account number or purchase order number to charge equipment hours to for the first session.
6. Read, and save for future reference, the standard operating procedure (SOPs) for the instrument you wish to use. The SOPs for each instrument can be found in the Instrument User Guide Index.
7. After training is completed, you will be given a login to the online schedule so that you can reserve instrument time from your own computer.
